The news is all over the internet. Search Giant Google has acquired YouTube for a whopping 1.65 billion dollars.

As always, guyz with funky spectacles and computers started speculating what exactly would be google thinking while acquiring YouTube. YouTube right now is surrounded by a lot of copyright issues and google’s acquisition is viewed as a unnecessary move.

YouTube allows its users to upload amateur as well as homemade videos to its website. But recently the facility has been misused for sharing copyrighted material such as tv series, music videos and parts of upcoming yet leaked movies :) .

But Google has been very longvisioned in this whole process. Google does see a big oppurtunity ahead in the video advertising arena. Google can integrate video ads in YouTube which would by then be a part of Google Video(Google decides to drop the “funny looking” name : YouTube).

Also it plans to tie up with big recording firms for delivery of copyrighted material. Infact its already on its process. If I am not wrong Google has agreements with Sony BMG in this regard.

Whatever be the outcome , Google certainly has started to dominate the whole internet by eating it from one side. Its just a matter of time before which we get to see who’s right and who’s not.

Well Today I happened to hear one of my frnds (a senior) talk something about “metallica” and “new album”.

So the first thing that I did after reaching room (I stay in a hostel btw ) was search for metallica’s new album.

The results that popped up were pretty interesting. I knew that METALLICA was against napster and illegal distribution of mp3s through internet. Amusingly the new album is named “download this” . and inorder to defeat the napster and the whole mp3 sharing grp on a whole, they did something very innovative.

The new album is about 74 min, and of which 50+ min is a single song !!. The rest of the time they have included an interview with the drummer. If you havent guessed this by now, here it is, The song is full of swearing about NAPSTER.. and the interview is no different.

Here’s the news thatz out.

Metallica released their long awaited “Download This” CD today, and the band declared it Napster-proof. The 74 minute CD contains one 55 minute song, “Napster Begone” and a 19 minute, one-question interview with drummer Lars Ulrich.

Download This“We wanted to make an album that those bastards on Napster wouldn’t steal and I think we succeeded,” said Lars. “We realized that we couldn’t stop the Napster movement, so we decided to make a Napster-proof album. The ‘Napster Begone’ track is so long and so horrible that no one in their right mind would take the time to download it. Our loyal fans will buy it though, because most have spent so much money on our merchandise that they can’t afford a computer.”

Critics agree that even people with the fastest connections to the internet shouldn’t bother downloading the 56+ MB “Napster Begone” MP3. “It’s pretty horrible,” said one critic, “Luckily I got it for free. The song goes on and on about how evil Napster is, then the interview is more of the same thing. The interviewer asks Lars how he is doing and then he blathers on for 19 minutes. Will that Lars ever shut up?”

Here’s a snippet from some of the song’s 278 verses:

Evil Napster, takes from me.
Crushing souls, and wrecking dreams,
MP3 you violate,
Copyrights, you desecrate.

Evil Napster, so dangerous
Stealing bread right from my mouth
T3 lines they are my bane
Evil Napster I wish you never came.

Pirates burning our CDs,
Screwing with my reality.
Evil Napster, devil from beyond
Demon Napster….begone.

Music industry follower Steve Cazarini said, “I don’t think you’ll see this done by many other artists. Sure Metallica can pull off a 55 minute song, but a band like the Backstreet Boys would run out of words that rhyme with ‘fire’ and ‘love’ after about 6 minutes. Even the mega-dance remix of “I Want It That Way” only ran for 8 minutes. It’s just not an option for most groups.”

“Download This” is available now at your local retailer and at your favorite online shops.

But what I think is certainly difficult.

If people can share/download/pirate movies (2hr + even) this small album wouldnt be a problem for them. And yeah, they can cut down downloads by a fair amount , but that doesnt mean the end of it. As the above quote says, bsb or other soft song makers wont be able to do such an outrageous effort.

Whatever !
